I believe that Brian Hughes made the right decision in deciding not to seek his sixth turn as County Executive. I admire Hughes more than ever for deciding not to run. I know his decision was a very difficult one as he really wanted to see the Mercer County airport expansion and various other projects through to their completion. However, the State Comptroller report that revealed that the county had been assessed $4.5 million in penalties and interest for its failure to pay taxes on time for years, due to the actions of its Chief Financial Officer (CFO), was an insurmountable obstacle to overcome and Hughes did the right thing by avoiding a bitter divisive primary fight.
